PLANNED AS UNITS$309,000 Sought In YMCACampaign For New BuildingAn over-all figure of $309,000 will be sought in a campaign for construct ion of a new YMCA building in Big Spring.This figure was established by the Y’s long-range planning committee Friday, after a study of approximate costs in keeping with facilities needed in the new project.These factors were based on report of three members who have recently inspected similar YMCA structures in Houston and in other cities in the Southwest.Plans are to devise the Y facility as units, so that, if necessary, different units could be handled separately. These three would be: (a) housing tor offices, club rooms, general assembly, recreation and refreshment quarters, etc.; lt;b gymnasium; (c indoor swim pool.The YMCA will have a tract of land in the Birdwell Park area (fronting north on 8th and just west of the old baseball park* made possible through an exchange of property with the City of Big Spring. Traded to the city will bea tract lying just north of the site, which has been donated to the YMCA by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Strom.The organization’s capital fund already has approximately $103,-000 in cash and pledges, representing a third of the required fund. Leaders of the Y said they areconfident that, with this good start, and with the general acceptance prevailing in the community for the YMCA's broad program, the fund drive should meet with success.Details of the fund-raising effort are to be worked out within the next few weeks.Formby To KeynoteHighway Meet HereMarshall Formby, chairman of the Texas Highway Commission, will be keynote speaker for the U. S. Highway 87 Improvement Association when it holds its annual meeting here next Saturday.Formby and his family will come here Friday, and will be Friday night guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Smith of Big Spring.
