Fifty Years Ago...MrsBy SUE GENTRY More than 200 neighbors and friends gathered Sunday at the Grain Valley Christian Church to help Mrs. Elsie Ann Hosier celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth. “There were • people here from all over this part of ;tHe country,” remarked her 79-year-old youngster son, Henry Hosier. Mrs. Hosier was born June 20, 1825, in Holmes County, Ohio. Her husband, Daniel Hosier, died at Grain Valley in 1907.* The annual Farm Bureau picnic to be held July 4th this year in connection with the Triangle Club celebration at the city park in Lee’s Summit commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first meeting of farmers, following -which “the shot was fired which was .heard around the world.” SeveralFarm Bureaus in counties all over the United States are celebrating the occasion with similar events. There will be a parade, program, basket dinner at noon. The Lee’s Summit, Blue Springs and Princess Stock Company bands will furnish the music through the day.military exercises at the fort.At the Witte Golf and Country Club in Independence Saturday and Sunday the clubhouse was the center of much activity. About 50 members and guests took dinner at the club. In the evening Mize Peters and Edward Paxton, with able help from the boys, put on quite a display of fireworks.Major Harry S Truman and Herbert Van Smith left in Major Truman’s car Sunday morning and drove to Fort Riley. They will take part in the annualMr. and Mrs. Herbert Major and small son, Herbert Clayton, Independence, and Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Montgomery of Blue Springs left Sunday for Minnesota where they will spend two weeks fishing.Mrs. Thornton Browning, 301 N. Pleasant, Independence, and her granddaughters, Pauline Pryor Payne and Betty Jean Payne, are the guests of Mrs. Browning’s daughter, Mrs. Felix G. Blackwell in Lee’s Summit.Mrs. Mary E. Locke, wife of J. B. Locke, 715 South Park, died July 2 at the Christian Church hospital in Kansas City. Her death followed an illness of several months. Services were held Saturday from the homeconducted by the Rev. S. F. Riepma. Burial was in Buckner Cemetery.The death of Thomas B. Buckner, judge of Division No. 1, Jackson County Circuit Court, will bring about a great political change in court circles. To Governor Baker, a Republican, will fall the task of appointing a successor to Judge Buckner, who was a Democrat.W. J. Bell has one of the sightly locations for country residences along Spring Branch Road. A few days ago Mr. Bell was in the midst of putting up hay and cleaning up his pretty place. He took time out to advise us that he had been on The Examiner subscription lists for more than a quarter of a century. ~ H” 1 -BireUTCHHIALMiss Nadine Liggett of the Blue Springs telephone exchange is spending her vacation visiting friends in I^ee’s Summit.The Rev. G. W. Hesler of Warrens-burg filled his regular appointment at Lobb Church Sunday. He was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. George St. Clair of Blue Springs.Miss Margaret Kelley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kelley, Nelson Road, sang two numbers in a recital given by the Cranston School of Music in Kansas City, Thursday evening.Hopkins Hardin, father of John H. Hardin, returned from Higginsville Thursday with Mr. Hardin to make his home in Independence for the summer.Dr. E. C. Krimminger is tearing out an old landmark on East Lexington St. He purchased the building several years ago and is now ready to erect a new building. The old building on the north side of the street was erected in 1886. The owners were Thomas C. Caldwell, former mayor and county clerk, and Joseph Noland. William Randall, father of the Randall boys who still live here, built the building and William Wolverton who was a young brick layer at the time it was erected, is tearing it down.Mr. and Mrs. John Grinter have opened their garden at 737 S. Main, to the public. More than 100 varieties of iris are to be found displayed. The plants have been collected from many parts of the United States.
