While practicing that profession she came to believe that limitation of large families was essential to social progress in cases where adequate financial support was lacking. In 1914-15 she studied with Havelock Ellis in London, and became associated there with Dr, Marie Stopeslaw who can always be depended upon to find a little money to help over a crisis, or to cnme and lend a hand when the wife is sick, or to look after the children while Tom and his wife take a trip. It isin her fight for birth control. Returning to this country, Mrs. Sanger founded the American Birth Control league and opened the first American birth control clinic in 1921. For this she was sentericed to 30 days imprisonment after the offices were closed by the police.
