A. Mabie came across a roll of papers which proved to be President Lincoln’s thanks and certificate of-honorable service issued to individual members of Company E. 138th Indiana volunteer infantry. These certificates are supposed to have been filed, away in the attic of the county jail by the late Captain Daniel W. Hamlin when he served as sheriff of Kosciusko county. While the majority of ‘those ex-soldiers to whom they were issued have since passed away, the certificates are doubtless valuable to and will be highly prized by surviving relatives, as well as by those living at present, to whom they were issued in 1864.
