Hunt(Continued from Page 1)One house in San Benito, which is not a birthing facility, boasts more than 500 births, Moreno said.Officials are tracking down the false documents by making deals with the parteras who issued them.At the federal courthouse Wednesday, a mother-daughter team pleaded guilty in an arrangement that would keep them out of prison if they tell who bought their papers.Marta Martinez, 32, and her mother, Isidora Chi de King, 64, operated their business out of the Brownsville and Port Isabel area, according to court documents.The pair, which charged $800 for each fake certificate, stood side by side before U.S. District Judge Filemon Vela as they admitted their crimes and took thedeal.“They’ve got to give up everything,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Surovic. ‘They get a chance to come clean and we get a chance to clean up our records.”The children are also being tracked by comparing birth records provided by the Mexican government with birth records filed by the midwives, Surovic said.“If the ladies aren’t telling the truth, she said, “it will be* easy to tell.”Their lawyer, Alberto Pullen, said he was pleased with the deal, but felt the government was coming down hard on his clients.“It is a federal felony, but I don’t think it should be,” Pullen said. “It’s not a crime of violence, doesn’t involve drugs and doesn’t hurt anyone.”
