Master of ceremonies was Col. John Phelan of the Marion Engineer Depot.Phillip Blue, of LaRue, Marion’s 1853 Soap Box Derby champion, received three trophies. He was presented the Keating Award, a trophy given- each year to the Derby winner, by the General Motors Corp. by Walter Grum-blatt of the Midtown Chevrolet. He was awarded the rotating trophy that goes to the winner’s school for one year, by Dari Gatchell, assistant principal of Harding High School. His third award was a large permanent trophy presented by Fred Harden, chairman of the 1953 Soap Box Derby.Richard Lister, assistant chairman of the Derby, presented i large trophy to the Class F winner, Donald Daniel. Riley Hall presented the two small Class A and B runnerup trophies io Pat Hughes of Mansfield and Larry Craig of Marion. Keith Ridgway received the Class A sponsor’s plague on behalf of the Ridgway Hatchery of LaRue from. Robert Haldeman.
