Children need it for play, families for picnio ing. Also high on his list were a Y. M. C. A., a larger school system, more paving, and a new jail. With a little improvement, he wrote, Railroad Creek could be made into a beautiful little water course instead of the unsightly dumping ground it nowis.•»Florence Sagness won second place, with a fine essay stating that the movemeni of people into cities has created new problems in every part of the world. Her number one civic need for Cherokee was also perks: A few small parks situated here and there would help the happiness -and friendliness of our people. A spot where citizens could rest and visit, with a few settees where old people could rest on their way to and from town. Some of her other ideas were unique. The construction of flats in the center of town would enable working class people to rent homes near their work, and keep contented those who do not own homes.”Sanitary disposal cf garbage, now accumulating in alleys, should be done without extra expense to property owners. We cannot have healthful homes as long as garbage stands imcover-ed.3ie also advocated factories for Cherokee to keep our people here, and lastly, that more ecoo omy be applied to city affairs. The more waste that is prevented, the less money will be needed tor taxes.I place this as the foremost of our needs - - - that the tax money be thoughtfully and economically spent.jv
