has a meadow and ravine that cuts through.“It was a hill to climb, a magic elevator,” she said, “and the children loved it. One of our former pupils, an eighth grader now, said he wrote his theme ‘Mountain Climbing’ from experiences climbing the ravine. Itseemed like a mountain to him as a youngster.”In the fall they gathered leaves from the sugar maples and birch, and in the spring wildflowers. An American flag was always on the tall yard pole and the children saluted it each morning.Life was never the same for some of the children after a fire destroyed the “magic” player piano in 1971, Mrs. Horn recalls.Mrs. Horn was a teacher and social worker before her marriage and Mrs. Hassett had been a secretary.Mrs. Joe Shafer, 10500 E. 38th, and Mrs. George Reeves, 3702 Northern, were pleasantly surprised to be reminded of the 100th birthday party of their great-grandmother, Mrs. Elsie Hosier, in The Examiner “Fifty Years Ago” column recently. They both recalled attending the party at the Hosier home in Grain Valley with their parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Shoup of Independence. Mrs. Hosier was their father’s grandmother.“We have many fond memories of visiting with our great-grandmother, and aunts and uncles and cousins,” Mrs. Shafer, the former Jinette Shoup, said. “In earlier days, we made the trip to Grain Valley by horse and buggy.”Mrs. Hosier lived until February 1927, just short of her 102nd birthday, Mrs. Shafer recalls.Curiously enough, one of Mrs. Hosier’s granddaughters, Mrs. Minnie Shoup Freeman, celebrated her 102nd birthday last April 17 at her home in Panama City, Fla.“Our great-grandmother was spry and witty right up to the last,” Mrs. Shafer said. “Their home was right next door to the Christian Church in Grain Valley. The church is still there but the home is gone.”A sixth generation of the family is still in the county, including Mrs. Shafer’s and Mrs. Reeves’ grandchildren.
