The hamlet of Sag Bridge goes back to about 1833. Its name is believed to be derived from a longer Indian designation. The church, which is near Archer Hoad, is on the Illinois and Michigan Canal and alongside the Calumet-Sag Fedder Canal. The area’s first residents were Irish Catholic immigrants who helped build the canals.St. James’ stone structure was built in 1852 after a log cabin had been used by the congregation for several years. The church covers the spot where an old French army post once stood, and an Indian village existed at one time about a mile to the east of it, a short distance from Ar-gonne.With all the activities and mixtures of people, there are even stories of ghosts at St. James about the turn of the century. Of course, they are just stories.Conlev Xpwk Servirn
