Translated literally it means gentle art, and is a modern day sport which is an outgrowth of ju-jitsu. the ancient bare handed fighting art used mostly for wartime.Dr. Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, made it into a safe sport like basketball and wrestling by inventing wavs of falling without injury and developing new techniques.Why would a young girl become interested in this kind of activity? Well, Kathv points out that she is a ‘ middle child” in a family of 10 children. She lives with her mother, Mrs. Betty Sheese, at 609 N. 15th St.Although two of her older sisters, Teresa and Debbie,are married, four sisters {Linda, age 20, Darlene. 17; Clara, 15; Ada, 14) as well as three younger brothers (Herbie, 11: Jimmy, 8; Bobby, 6) are still at home. Every try a tate-shi-ho-gatme?Those among the initiated will recognize these judo terms as meaning proper basic posture and vertical four corner hold, respectively.However, for those among the majority who find the terms completely foreign, Kathy Sheese, a local teenager who has been studying judo since she was 12 yearsold, could do much to enlighten them.She now holds the rank of yonku (junior division).Kathy recently discussed judo for her English class in summer session at Laboratory School. She told her classmates and Miss Jane Horvath, student, teacher working with Mrs. Mary Tran-barger, that she hopes eventually to earn her black belt and become a judo instructor.Kathy first became interested in judo when her sister’s friend was at their home discussing the subject. He was taking lessons at Indianapolis at the time and had his uniform in the car.When he remarked that judo was a good thing for girls to get interested in, Kathy decided that she was odc girl who was going to do just that and enrolled in a class at the YMCA.For the past year and a half this 16-year-old lass has been studying at the Terre Haute Judo - Karate School.
