In the night of that day, leaving a detail of pickets on the river tank, we marched up the Rappahannock, lighting fires at intervals, for ten miles, to United States Ford, to indicate that a large force was taking position At daybreak of the 14th, moiing a mile or so away from the river, a halt was ordered for coffee and then the regiment made a fast and terrible hard march under a blazing sun, overtaking the 2nd Corps a1 Stafford C.
