Merrill BeaushawMerrill Beaushaw to celebrate 100thMerrill Dale Beaushaw was born July 22,1913, at a farm west of Jamestown in Jewell County. His parents were the late Evelyn B.and Ada Goldie Beaushaw.Merrill is the second oldest child of eight children. Merrill attended Jaybird School in Jewell County for the first eight grades. He never went to high school but went to work on the farm.On Jan. 5,1942, Merrill was inducted into the U.S. Army as an automotive mechanic. During World War II, he was in battle at Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples-Fog-gia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and central Europe. He was among the first to land on Anzio Beach. He received the following commendations: Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Bronze Service Arrowhead, and Croix de Guerre with Palm. He was discharged from the Army Sept. 20, 1945, with the rank of Tec 5.After Merrill returned from the war, he farmed and was an auto mechanic until 1958 with Elniff Motors. Then he was employed with the Cloud County Highway Department until his retirement in 1978. Even after his retirement, he still worked for farmers when needed.On Sept. 18, 1949, Merrill married Esther Pickle at Jamestown United Methodist Church. Merrill and Esther are parents to three daughters: Gloria Coss, Marylin Bean and Karen Anderson. They have nine grandchildren,12 great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 11 stepgreat-grandchildren,and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.Merrill was a member ofthe Cloud County Barbershop Chorus in 1967. He is a Past Commander of the VFW Post 588.On Merrill’s 90th birthday, his daughters presented him with an honorary high school diploma.Merrill’s birthday will be celebrated with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. July 20 in the Carlile Room at Frontier Estates, 601 N. Buckeye, Abilene. No gifts please (bring a food staple item for the food bank). Cards are welcome.
