A brief for a collection of money In behalf of Protestant refugees was Issued by King William III of England. In 1600. Nearly £12.000 was raised upon this occasion and placed In the hands of the English chamberlain for disbursement upon the order of the Archbishop of Canterbury. According to old documents preserved in the library at Guild Hal|. London, In August. 1700. the Bishop of London wrote to the City Chamber!shi as follows: Rlr— The bearer. Monsieur Castayne, is going oat surgeon to ye French now departing for Virginia. He wants £20 to make nphi* chest of drugs and Instruments. It 1* a eery small matter for such a voyage, bnt if you have in your hand to supply that sumnie I will answer for my liOrd of Canterbury that he shall allow of vou so doing .”From land records ft la learned that Dr. Stephen Castalng between the year* 1714 and 1730 received patent* for 1.400 acre* of land In Henrico and Goochland counties,chiefly the former. Pierre Chastain also patented some 500 acres, and in the liat of titbables at Mannikinthwn in 1744 appear*under the title head of the house and black* for slaves* John Chastain andfire. Aieo through land record* It la ascertained that a fourth member of this familywas Included among these refugees, since awarrant, dated April 1, 1717, gives to Charles Chastain 672 acres of land in Charles City, concerning which it Is statedthat it was trranteri fnrwidow of Joseph Koyaii ana iert issue: Mary laham, who married William Randolph, of Turkey laland; Elisabeth Isham, married Francis Eppes. of Henrico. He must also have left a daughter who married about 1710 a Chastain, probably Pierre or Jean ; otherwise, except as a fancy name, we cannot account for Isham Chastain, ofHalifax, in 1752” jIn the Virginia Hlstorl . Their son was Howell Chastain and hl« son Is Jsmes B.
