These two were among the refugees from France to South Carolina, and In addition to these who fled from La Rochelle and reached the American colony In safety, he had an elder son. Hector Francois Chas-tatgnlcr, who sought to make his escape from hts native land at the same time. He was captured, however, thrown into prisonand subjected to shameful maltreatment,under which he displayed the heroic fortitude and constancy of a martyr.But the Chastains settled In Virginia as well as South Carolina. In 1700, according to the Virginia Historical Collection, morethan 500 Huguenot Immigrants, led by the Marquis de la Muce. were landed in Virginia by four debarkations and settled along the Potomac, the Rappahannock, and James rivers. Three clergymen and two physicians were among the first settlers, and one of these physicians was Dr. StephenCaatalng. The Huguenots bestowed upon their colony town the characteristic Indian name of Monokln or Mannlkintown, and the three Chastains recorded first were: Dr. Stephen Cbsstaln. Chastain, formerly of Baltimore, but now of New York tlty. la a direst descendant of Rene and Judith Chastain, the birth of whose three tons Is recorded in the ancient French archives quoted above, (1) Isaac Chastain, born March 15, 178$; (2) Pierre Chastain, born September 6, 1736; (3) Marianne Chastain, born May 17, 1738; (4) Rene Chastain, born June 30, 1741./Rene Chastain, born 1741, son of Rene, the Huguenot emigrant, had a son Isham Chastain, born 1766. died 1858 It is thought that Rene Chastain 2d married s Miss Isham, or perbapa the elder Rene. Certain It is that In the French baptismal records the name Isham occurs at an early date In connection with the Chastains.In the Virginia Mags sine, volume TV, page 433, It Is stated : Henry Isham, settles at Bermuda Hundred and died 1675, was son of Mary Brett sister of Sir Edward Brett and William Isha®.
