2—RENO EVENING GAZETTEJULY 6, 1960State Library Purchases First Mobile Library; Washoe to UseNevada's first custom builtbookmobile changed hands quickly after delivery from the manufacturer this week.Purchased by the Nevada State Library with federal funds under the Library Services Act passed by Congress in 1356 forimprovement and extension of library service in rural areas, fiie bookmobile was tumd oever to State Librarian Joseph F. Shubert by State Purchasing Agent Francis Brooks. Shubert Immediately turned the vehicle over to Washoe County Librarian William E. Andrews under whose direction the mobile library program gets underway next week.The bookmobile is a complete traveling .library accommodating more than 1,500 books, complete with librarian's desk and floor space sufficient to accommodate several adults and children at one time. Under terms of a contract between the state and Washoe County library board, the bookmobile is loaned without cost to be used in free public library service in rural areas, Lyon County library board, with the cooperation of Lyon County commissioners, budgeted funds to finance the mobile library program in rural areas of that county. Headquarters for the two county operation will be Washoe County library in Reno.Under the state - county arrangement the counties provideoperating expense, staff, and books, while the stale provides the bookmobile, technical assistance, and additional books as necessary. Miss Jo Battle, former consultant at the state library has been retained by the Washoe County Library as temporary bookmobile project director to get the program underway. Andrews said Mrs. Betty O'harra, extension librarian, will provide the library services assisted by Mr. Joseph Ludlow, driver.In Washoe County the new unit replaces the Volkswagens book bus service inaugurated two years ago, and in Lyon County it is the first mobile service available.According to Andrews and Mrs. Ralph Crawford, LyonCounty Library board chairman, the two - county operation provides more books, and more complete library service in each county at a lower per capita cost.Operating out of Reno, the bookmobile will serve rural communities on a regular schedule, visiting every two weeks. A few centers will receive service on alternate runs, bringing the bookmobile to them every four weeks.
