Johnmantj at the end of the third quar-Benton, led by a- strong one-two scoring performance by Curt Rieherson and Bob Chapman, topped Zeigler 74-65 Thursday night to advance to the finals of its Mid * winter basketball tournament 'Du Quoin scored a minor upset in the upper bracket consolation’play by handing CarbondaleCommunity its third straight setback and second in the tourney 161-57.Murphysboro meets Christopher at 7 p. ir.. tonight in lower bracket consolation play and Sparta faces Chester at 8:30 p. m. in a top semifinal offering which decides Benton’s opponent in the finals Saturday nightThe Rangers, favored to take the title, fired .500 from the field while Rieherson broke loose for 27 points and Chapman tallied 25. Chapman led the Rangers in the . first half, netting 14 • points ) while hitting consistently on jump shots from the corner. Rieherson hit 14 points in the last half.George Coonr canned 21 points and John Raski dropped in a 17-point output.. Zeigler's fast break looked sharp at times but the Benton outcourt scoring was too much for. the Tornadoes.Benton jumped off to a 14-11 first quarter lead: as Chapman hit four of six jump shots along the base base line. Nine fouls were called against Benton in the first quar-tempts as-Zeigler failed to cap- j talize on the opportunity for a strong start.-Guard Jerry Hiller scored a fast break layup and two free throws to give Zeigler a 15-14 load at the start of the second quarter. Benton went back onRaski hit three straight shots to give Zeigler a 24-20 lead before Benton, came back strong , to take a 35-27 halftime lead.Benton nailed five straight shots with Chapman, Kimmel and Rich-ei'son hitting long jumpers in the turning point that erased Zeigler’sfinal lead of the game.Both teams shot well from the floor in the last half with Benton hitting 15 of 29 shots and Zeigler 12 of 25, The Tornadoes outscor-ed Benton 20-18 in the third quarter to cut the Benton lead to 53*47 at the end of the stanza.Connor tallied 15 points in the last half but Zeigler was unable to halt Benton's scoring. -The Rangers lost starters Terry Thomas Kimmel and Tom ’Whittington on fouls in the fourth quarter. Whittington had. picked up his fourth foul in the first • quar-ing • minutes when Benton had pulled to a 12-point cushion before .Zeigler cut the final deficit to nine points. rZeigler shot a respectable 42 per . cent from the floor .on 21 of 50 but missed 16 of - 37 free ■; throws. Benton got only 19 free throws and connected on 10. The Rangers hit 31 of 62 floor shots.Carbondale took a 21-13 firstDu Quoin outscored the Terriers 16-10 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 31-29 at Tialftime. Carbondale came back strong in the fhird.quarter on the strength of the .shooting: of .Mike Diamondter.Charles Frederick, Steve Riggio and Leon Longshore led Du Quoin to a 55-54 lead. Mike Greer dumped in a free toss to tie it at 55-55 before. Du Quoin went ahead to stay. Bill Neal dropped in two free throws and Paul Marek scored a fasfc-break layup to give Du Quoin the advantage.Du Quoin shot 50 per cent from the field 25 of 50 and hit a creditable 11 of 14 free throws.
