Two-Thirds Of Maternal Deaths Could Be PreventedBy Science ServiceWASHINGTON, Jan. 22.—Nearly two-thirds of the mothers who died in childbirth might have been saved by more adequate and efficient care before, during and after the births of their infants, Dr. Philip F. Williams of the University of Pennsylvania School oi Medicine declared at the Conference on. Better Care for Mothers and Babies held here under the auspices of the U. S. Children’s*Bureau.Blood poisoniifg, following abortion or after the birth of a child, causes about 40 out of every 100 of the maternal deaths. The condition is known medically as sepsis or septicemia and is due to infection witha germ or micro-organism. Hemorrhage causes 12 out of every 100 of the maternal deaths. More of these deaths occur in rural regions than in cities. Toxemia of pregnancy, another cause of maternal deaths which can be prevented in most cases, occurs at more than twice as great a rate in the country as in cities.These facts, brought out in various surveys, show, Dr. Williams said; that three forces are necessary to eliminate the avoidable causes of deaths of mothers in childbirth. First of these, he said, is more thorough education of medical students.nurses, midwives and practicing physicians.-Second is provision by the State both of greater facilities for education of doctors, nurses and public and of means for providing adequate care to mothers who cannot get it by themselves, either because of poverty or distance from medical centers.
