THE STORY OF VIRGIL AND THE THREE JAPANESE FLIES — Sometimes this dept, is extremely slow at reporting the news. Way back in November I announced, a Little breathlessly, that three Soutliiand bartenders would represent the U.S. in an international mixing competition in Japan.Weeks and months passed. No report appeared here telling how our three courageous mixologists fared in the contest. Today, however, X have the latest bulletin on the event, received from one of the contestants, Virgil Jones, who’s a bartender at Raffles, an outstanding res-THOMEY taurant in Downey.There are two reasons why the news was so slow coming in: (I) Virgil is a turtle; and (2) the U.S. team — which included J. Popo Galsini, of the Disneyland Hotel, and Jose Ruiseco, of the Red Onion in Torrance — was wiped out in the competition, coming in sixth.
