Silas Oak Hunter was born at Middle Grove, Jan. 24, 1877. three months after the death of his father. He was nine years oid when his mother brought him to Moberly.He attended grade school-and high school here, then he entered the University of'Missouri to! earn a degree in medicine. Changed Professions jIt was after his first year of ■ j preparatory study afs a doctor that his uncle'persuaded him to change professions. But before he graduated at the law school of the University of Missouri, he had distinguished himself as' a football player. He played right guard with the .Tigers in 1898 and 1899, when the Tigers were meeting teams from Purdue, De-Pauw, Washington University, Christian Brothers College, Kansas and Nebraska.He located in Kansas City after his graduation and prepared) to enter the legal department of ] Swift and Company. He spent a! year studying the packing business in detail, learning to pick and stick chickens, candle eggs and organize branch houses in 'Missouri and Kansas.Held Several OfficesWhen he returned to Moberly, he ran for the office of city attorney and served for two terras.During that time he also was assistant to Harry Lamotte, prosecuting attorney, who died in 1905.
