THE MANNEQUIN IN the display window of Anthony Paness’ art studio out on North Main Street bears a strange, almost human, likeness to Auvord Bevans Breathwaite Jones. And four years after the brutal murder of A. Jones, theHermit of Paris, the mannequin is about all that remains to remind us of the unsolved crime.Police found the old hermit, beaten and frozen with his hands bound behind him, in the shack alongside Loop 256 exactly four years ago today. There were few' leads, and no clues. The file on the murder Is a thick one, still resting in the active investigative section at the County Attorney's Office. Every now and then, someone thumbs through it. For two. maybe three years, there was a new lead now- and then. The past year has produced nothing.Anthony Paness. who once painted a portrait of the hermit, created the mannequin likeness of A. Jones and keeps it in his display window’. “Maybe the killers will come by my place and look in and see Mr. Jones again,” explains Paness. And maybe theyll realize w’hat they've done.”The killer is still free. The unsolved murder remains a dark mark on the conscience of Paris. This will serve as an annual reminder that we haven't forgotten . . .
