' LETTKR FROM GE\« HELVTZELMAN.LTNew Orleans, Jan. 6.—Flaked Bulletin of this morning contains the following letter from General a Ueintzelman, charged with committing an offence e, against the laws oi Texas at Galveston, Dec. 26 :—^ 44 Judge B. F. Baldwin, U. S. District Attorney, ofj Houston, a few days since was served with a capias from Seguin, Guadaloup county, Texas, issued by il j Judge Ireland, notoriously disloyal. He replied by Y « furnishing the order under which I acted and a letter from my Adjutant General, enclosing it to the agent ^ J of the Freedmen’s Bureau at Seguin. Neither he nor d j I went to Seguin. The present disturbed condition of the country will not admit my leaving the post. I would not deem my life safe in the hands of the Texas authorities, as I know of two individuals who were recently taken from jail in Bellen, Belle County, by a mob and put to death. There is a strong feeling against officers who have been in any way instrumental in sustaining the United States laws, particularly those connected with the Freed men's Bureau. The evident object of this process is to annoy and oppress me for performing my duty, and thfough me to throw discredit on the United States authorities in this state.(Signed) S. P.
