Eli Bass had shaved the former, and as lie was passing into .the corridor to make his exit, Doolittle and Vance stepped from their cells into the corridor also, Doolittle remarking, “I guess I will go out, too.” Sheriff Kirkham was standing at the outer door, but supposed the man to be jesting. Doolittle then crowded up to the door in front of Bass, remarking, “I must go” at the same time drawing a piece of chair leg from one of his inner pockets with which he directed a savage blow at Kirkham’s head, barely grazing his temple. Bass caught the culprit’s arm before another lick could be made, and, by a quick movement, Kirkham gained the outside of the door, locking Bass into the corridor with Doolittle and Vance. AVhen as-s is tan ce was seen red, Va n ce was replaced in his cell,- Doolittle was deposited In the dungeon and Bass was set free. Doolittle Is a desperatecharacter, and is confined on a charge of assault and battery with attempt to kill. Vance, recently sentenced to two years imprisonment, is awaiting to be taken to Jeffersonville.
