A retired mining engineer, he enjoys fair health in 1' spite of his advanced age.He was born in Roscommon, Ireland, and came to America at the age1 of 11 years, accompanying a sister.1 Mr. Gately learned the mechanic trade during their residence in Morrison, N. J.The family moved from Morrison to Braid wood, III., where for over 20 years Mr. Gately was employed as master mechanic for the Chicago, Wilmington and Vermillion Coal \ company. The next 28 years of his | life was spent as master mechanic for^ the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Coal company at their mine in Gran-I ville. He retired 12 years ago when i the mine was sold. p* Mr. Gately has had several interesting experiences working for the coal companies, especially when he h was called to help in rescue work during the flood at the Diamond mine near Braidwood, when more than 200 ; miners were drowned.Gately is the father of 13 children,! eight of whom are living. They are: r Albert L. Gately, Chicago, general : manager of mines for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad; Barney Gately, Jr., chief engineer at Bel-mont hotel, Chicago; Hugh Gately, Bloomington; Arthur Gately, traffic manager, Chicago; Dennis Gately, engineer in a Gary, Ind., school; Mrs. Robert Behn, Granville; Mrs. F.
