Six persons were already under arrest in the Lauderdale county jail here, among them Ruby Roebuck to whom Police Sergeant W. Lavalle Smith said Chapman was married in Eutaw, Ala., last fail under the assumed name of C. Halvert.The girl, together with Alfred Ward, companion of Chapman hist night and Alvin Irons and his wife of Neshoba county and Alvin Richard Burks and his wife, Pearl, of Meridian, were charged with being dangerous and suspicious.Percy Wyly, II, head of the federal bureau of investigation in Mississippi said the drive would be extended throughout Neshoba county where some of Chapman's friends considered him a “hero” and that charges of harboring a federal fugitive would\— .. ... i* _ ... t • fw jnuciicu iJi \Ji. UiCWyly said Chapman, wanted for many crimes in a half-dozen states, had been in hiding in rural Neshoba county for the past year with officers hot on his trail.His ambush by a heavy squad of F. B. I. officers led personally by Wyly, state and city police a few miles from Philadelphia on a highway dated back to the shooting and dangerous wounding January 14, 1942, of Ralph McNair, Meridian policeman, who sought to question three men on a truck who were drinking in the outskirts of Meridian.
