The gear was packed in 20 trunks, five suitcases and numerous cardboard boxes.The Astro equipment department packed 150 dozen baseballs, 40 batting helmets, 1K0 cloth caps, and 252 bats.Each man will have five uniforms Also, 50 dozen pair of socks, two dozen flitting gloves, and 200 sweatshirts were in theshipment.General Manager H.B. (Spec) Kichardson and Vice-President Grady Hatton left for camp Friday.The rest of the team is due to arrive Feb. 20 with the first workout March 1. The first exhibition game is March 11 against tfie Minnesota Twins.A young and determined team from St. John played with the poise of veterans in the openinggame of the TCIL State Tour-nement. The girls trailed Houston St Agnes almost thewhole but never gave up and earned a 40-39 win and a berth in the state finals. The Friday action was the opening round of the tournement held in the spacious Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio.St John stayed close on the long range shooting of Donna Patak H7 pts) as well as good defensive play from Janice Kubin, Cindy Valek, Rita Vlk and Cyndy Kubala. In the final two minutes it was the clutch free throw shooting of Vickie Grier however that secured the victory. Vickie hit 5 of 6 in the final action to put St. John ahead. Anna Wilcher, Susan Krajca and Donna Zmolik also played well for St. John.The championship gamematched St. John against Corpus Christi Incarnate Word. Incarnate Word had defeated Alamo Catholic from Amarillo to earn their berth in the finals. St. John however was unable to contain Anne Russek the senior star for the Angels and dropped a 50-27 decision. A cold second half proved to be the downfall as the Crusaderettes could not cut the lead.Donna Patak was again high with 12 points and all guards including the above plus Patti Zmolik did a good job. This was the highest St. John has ever finished and left the season mark at 20-14. TheCrusaderettes finished thirdlast year.%/The team contains only underclassmen and thus all theplayers have vowed to return to San Antonio next year to capture the elusive state title. Team members are Donna Patak (Jr.). Susan Krajca (Jr.), Donna Zmolik (Jr.), Becky Prachyl (Sophomore), Janice Kubin (Jr.), Cindy Valek (Jr.), Rita Vlk (Jr.), Cyndy Kubala (Soph.) and Patti Zmolik (Soph.).
