TOURIST CAMP A BENEFIT'COTo The Northwestern: We agree wilh C, K. Wittmack that this city needs a new tourist camp and one that is attractive, and we hope that after a thorough explanation he will agree that we have done the right thing.In 1035 the North Side Business Men’s club had a committee appointed to investigate possibilities of a tourist camp. We thought it possible to get the land called Doemel's point for this purpose, but we found that properly to be in a restricted residential area, and we were advised o£ this by the city attorney. We dropped the tourist camp project then and plans were made to start action late In the tall for a tourist camp for 1930.The best possible spot was Menominee park. We disagree with Mr. Wittmack that a tourist camp would destroy the beauty of the park. The writer can recall numerous parks in the stale that are on par with our park in beauty and they maintain a tourist camp which in no way hinders in the appearance of the park.Mr, Witimack stales that we are selling out the beauties of our park lor commercial purposes. In that respect we can refer to the fact that the state- of Wisconsin is guilty of the same thing, are they not opening tourist camps in the shite parks? As far as the cleanliness of the tourists is concerned there was less fault to find with them than with some of our careless picnickers. This statement was given to the writer, by a man who had charge of the j tourist camp at that time. ? .When one stops to think that “ 1 a total of over 10 million dollars * _ was spent in this state by tourists an ; last year, one wonders why this j un® city did nothing to keep the tour- t.} ists here instead of letting them pass through.One would imagine that we did not have the finest fishing waters in the state, the best facilities for boating and yachting, fine swimming beaches, golf courses, beautiful homes and buildings. What has northern Wisconsin to offer except Its wilderness effects?Upon investigation of the tourists last year it was found that the majority were grouped in-the better tourist camps of the state.Most of these popular tourist camps had something to offer the tourists, fishing, swimming, boating and so forth, and no one complained at paying the fee to camp there. Has not Oshkosh all these facilities?The park board has graciously allowed the use of that section of Menominee park on a trial plan for a tourist camp and the mayor and common council have allowed the use of the Twenty-first and j *iesi Doty street park and the park at the foot of Punhoqua street on the' West Side. So really'. Mr. Wittmack, we can’t see where criticism is fair to a city that needs new industries and enterprises to make business conditions better.
