Majority Leader Mike Mansfield (D.-Mont) took the Senate floor on the eve of Lincoln's birthday to tell groups opposing the filibuster ..that^ they should Ttend^to their own business and let us tend to ours.With those few words he gave the public a capsule version of why so many matters of vital interest to the public get short shrift- in the Senate. Although there are many senators who are very sensitive to the will of the people, there arc some who think of themselves as a. combination of dicty and medieval monarch.Perhaps because of the influence of h j plantation barons who have so long y \ \\ ieldcd power in the Senate, that . il j area of the Capitol is often more like c I what one would expect in a king’s private castle than in a legislative chamber of a democracy-Still business of the peopleThere arc special elevators for senators only.
