Fite, a 59-year-old Ions:- *shoreman, today had a birth eer- !tificate for his 47-year-nld riaugh-ter, but the clerks in the Harris County clerk's office still were in a state of shock.When Fite walked into the office yesterday to ask for a delayed birth certificate for his daughter, Mrs. Virgie M. Cagle of Houston, he gave his age as 59 and his daughter as 47.A shocked clerk said:“What? Are you just 12 years older than your daughter?’’“That's right” explained Fite, who is proud of his record. Then he added a second shock, ex-j plaining Mrs. Cagle was his see-1 ond child. The first, a son, wasborn, Fite said, when he was onlv 10 voars old.Later the longshoreman told reporters he was first married whenhe was approximately 10 years old:|that he had been married three times and had a total of 16 children and 21 grandchildren.Fite explained his early marriage. His mother, he said, died when he was small and his father remarried. He couldn't get along with his stepmother, so he ranaway to a relative’s home.“Father brought me back home to Doskie, Miss..” he said, “and askpri me what 1 wanted to do.1 was just 9 years and 10 monthsold. I told him T wanted to getmarried and have a home of myown.“I told him T wanted to marrya neighbor girl. Josie Morris, who :was 12 years old. My father went I to see the girl's father and told I him what I wanted. Mr. Morris hit the ceiling and said the seatI of my pants should be whipped off. ! About that time his wife came to I the door and told him to shut up.” Fite said he and the girl weremarried soon after that. Their j first child was horn nearly a yearI later, followed by the daughter:when Fite was 12 and his wife 14.
