THAYER HALL, DAMAGED BY FIRE TO THE EXTENT OF 15000 TO *7000.Its Occupants Lose Heavily—Several of Them Get OutFor the second time within two month* Harvard was visited by a serious fire yesterday afternoon, when a blnxr g-nt started In Thayer hall, one of the largest dormltorlea In the yard. During the rhrlstma* recess Hollis hall was damaged to the extent of several thousand dollars. The estimate of the college lose by yesterday’s Ore Is from ffiofV to I70CC, and the loss to the students who occupied rooms .n the building will be from 13'00 to 14000. The university’s loss Is covered by Insurance, but that to students Is not.In the north entry of Thnyer. where yesterdi '* fire was. there were 514 rooms, occupied by 43 men. None of the roonts are nt for occupancy, and the college will provide quarters for II*# men In other dormitories until Thayer is again fit for use.The north entry of Thayer is one-third of the whole tuilding. The three parts are separated by 'wo thick fire walls, so the other parts of the building were never In danger.The fire had gained considerable headway before It was discovered. It was at first thought It started m room 60,the college painter# were at work, but all was well In thia room. In fact the painters who were at work knewnothing of the fire until It bad « good start They could not get out through th# hallway, but were forced to jumpout of the window.ft t# evident after the fire that It began In the hallway on the ground floor of the building and ate Its way upward.T*e greatest damage by flr* Was on the second floor, where all of the rooms were completely ruined. The room* on the first floor were almost entirely destroyed. hut they are not beyond repair. On the third and fourth floors the Are did very little damage, but smoke and water destroyed all that was In therooms, with few exceptions.Room W rn the top floor was in the best condition.
