George Vernon SmithGeorge Vernon Smith, 89, of the Rock Ridge community, died Tuesday, Feb. 12,2013. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, 11 a.m., at Buckhom United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Buckhom Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour before the funeral.After graduating from Rock Ridge High School, George worked in the shipyard at Newport News, Va., during World War II. After the war, he assisted Mr. Sheffield, the agriculture teacher at Rock Ridge, retraining returning veterans in modem farming techniques. George married Ezell Bailey on Nov. 27,1946. After doing plumbing work for a time in Wilson, George and “Easy,” as many called her, returned to run the family farm at Rock Ridge. When George retired from farming he worked for the state for 10 years and continued to grow a large vegetable garden, sharing produce with extended family, friends and neighbors. George was a member of Buckhom United Methodist Church and one of the original founding members of the Rock Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a fireman for 20 years and continued to serve on the board of directors.George was preceded in death by his parents, Theophelius Randolph and Euzelia Renfrow Smith; brothers, Joseph Thomas Smith, Donald C. Smith and Fred A. Smith; and sisters, Senie Lee Smith Fulghum and Elizabeth Smith Bryan.He is survived by his wife, Ezell Bailey Smith; son, Timothy V.
