Drug overdose appears to be self-inducedBy KEN de llt; BASTIDEken.delabastide@heraldbulletin.comFor the third time since Jan. 26 an inmate at the Pendleton Correctional Facility has been found dead in his cell.Keith Lausterer, 40, was found unresponsive in his bed on Sunday by prison officials.According to the Indiana Department of Correction, thestaff attempted to resuscitate Lausterer, who was pronounceddead at 10:07 a.m.Marian Dunnichay, Madison County deputy coroner, said an autopsy will be performed on Lausterer today at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.“It appears to be self-induced, Dunnichay said of the possible drug overdose. “He was depressed and several noteswere found.”There was no sign of trauma on Lausterer, she said.Lausterer was convicted of murder in Floyd County on Feb. 26, 2003, and was sentenced to 65 years. His earliest projected release date was Aug. 12, 2034, according to The Associated Press.“Recent inmate deaths have caused a great concern for the Department of Correction,” Commissioner J. David Donahuesaid in a statement. “It is most unfortunate for the offender population and staff morale.”On Feb. 6, inmate Nyeusi McCreary, 20, was found dead in his cell and the DOC is treating his death as a possible drug overdose.McCreary was sentenced to prison in 2004 from Grant County on drug and battery convictions.“Both cases are still under investigation,” said Java Ahmed, director of public and media relations for DOC. “It is unfortunate, we are trying to do the best we can.”Ahmed said counselors have been meeting with staff members and there will be additional training on what warning signs should be watched for in inmates.Officials were awaiting toxicology results on McCreary, according to Coroner Ned Dunnichay.See Prison / A2Recent inmate deaths have caused a great concern for the Department ofCorrection.
