Many curiosities have been discovered on the bottom of the lakes and others have been thrown up by the iu« muse dredges that did the work of digging the canal.Herman Bolhenhagen, a prominent fanner of the town of North Cape, has one curious article that bids fare to take u, prominent place in the sieniiflc world, ft is an immense bone, 14 inches in length and 10 inches wide. It is l«g« than any elephant bone and the conclusion arrived at is that it must be m. parif of the skeleton of an immense animal of some kind, possibly a Mastodon. This bone was found on the bottom of Muskego lake and has been carefully cleaned and preerved by Mr. Botheihagen who ■will make a careful search for tne remainder of the skeleton.Many persons who are posted in regard to animals have viewed toe bone and freely stale that it is from some animal of immense proportions and much, larger that the biggest elephant and probably a part of the anatomy of a tremendous Mastodon that frequented the vicinity of Muskego lake centuries ago.According to history a Mastodon is a genus of fossil proboscidian pachyderms, uearlv allied to the elephant, but with simpler grinding teeth, adapted for bruising Coarser vegetable substances, or perhaps fitted for an animal of a more omnivorous character than its modern representative. The teeth were roughlymanimihLted, hence the name, meaning tcatrtooth. Eleven of twelve species have beer, described from the Miocene, Plcioeene, and 1‘lcistoeenO strata :tl Europe, Asia and America. Recently the .ctrified remains of a Mastodon wereound in New York state. The skull complete was of enormous size and estv natcd weight was COO pounds. One of he fore-legs, including the thigh bone, jriM 7 feet in length and weighed loO jo-.mds; the first joint of the hind leg measures 2 feet, 5 inches in length, and Ac second joint of the same leg 3 feet, t inches.
