Q nimby of Portland, Me., whoso successfully practiced for about 20 years the mental method of treating disease, which is now claiming so much attention from all classes and i so wideh accented as the surest and host method of eradicating disease. Atthe time Dr. Quimby was practicing, thismethod was new to the world, and althoughhe did a vast amount of good, he had, like allminds that take the lead, to how to the judgment of smaller minds and meekly accept thetitle of humbug, which ignorance always bestows on wisdom that it cannot understand.In speaking with a gentleman on this subject a short time since, 1 was surprised and pleased to learn that he owed his life to the wisdom of that good man, that lie had been amember of t.lie same household for a length oftime: and also a student of Dr. Quimby. Herelated to ine map y interesting incidents thatoccurred in the doctor's practice, and whichcame under his own observation, and gave ashort sketch ol* Dr. Quimby \s life and characteristics. Among other things lie said that at one time having occasion to go to a closetconnecting with the doctor's office, he found there an armful ol crutches and canes that had been left by patients, who, after being treated by the doctor, had no further use for them.This gentleman informs me that J^r. Quimbydid a great amount of writing on the subjectof mental healing, or his theory, which hetermed “Science of Health.’-lie always claimed that it was a sciencewhich could be taught and demonstrated, andthat the demonstration was as clear and sure as that of mathematics. The writings are all preserved, and will soon be published, those having them in charge have only been waitingfor the general thought to progress beforeplacing them before the public. Some parties healing through a fnental method, which theyclaim to have discovered, did, in reality, obtain their first thoughts of this truthfrom Dr. Quimby, and have added their own opinions to the grain of wisdom thus obtained, presenting to the people a small amount of wheat mixed with a great quantity of chaff. Dr. Quimby never had what he called classes or students, but to such of his patient* as were interested to investigate the matter, he loaned his writings and also gave them such explanations as would enable them to do thework he did if they wished to enter the field, but the method was not popular, a* I have before said, and few felt any interest beyond being restored to health and happiness;therefore even those who might have carried the good work on feared to battle so powerful an enemy as the opinions of the world. Dr. Quimby was, in many respects, a wonderful man ; he feared nothing, and lie dared to do anything that his wisdom taught him was right. He was no respecter of persons, and upheld only truth, without regard to whence it came. The opinions of the people, with regard to himself and hts ideas, were of no importance in his eyes. When we see a few like him in the same field of action,who, while they are in the world are yet not ol it. we shall see sin and sickness decreasing, instead of increasing. A.
