The United Pentecostal Church, 907 23rd Ave, is one of the out-of-the-way churches that will surprlseyou.The church Sunday School averages over 100 each week and has had a high attendance of lflS. Two outreach ministries of the church reach into the State Correctional Institution for three services and in Ihe Pioneer’s Home for another. The church helps sponsor theHarvest Time*’ radio program at 1:30 p.m. each Sunday over KJNP.The first surprise comes when you walk through the front door of the Sanctuary. The beautiful, new surroundings are spacious enough to seat 275 worshipers comfortably- The $150,000 building was completed in 197S—mostly with donated labor and the work of the pastor. The educational space adjacent to the auditorium will accomodate 150 children for Sunday School.The church has a congregational form of government, but Is affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church International with headquarters in Hazelwood, Mo.“We are often misunderstood on this affiliation with the international organization. We do not believe you have to be a member of the Pentecostal International to be in the body of Christy Pastor D.L. Carnley said.The doctrines of the church are identified with the famous Azusa Streetrevival of the Holy Ghost ministry of1906 In Los Angeles.During the last 21 days of the 19th century, a band of earnest hungry-hearted ministers and Christian workers in Bethel Bible College At Topeka, Kan., called a fast, praying earnestly for a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit which, to their joyful surprise, came upon them In the early hours of the morning on January 1,1901.The people were heard speaking in • other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them utterance. The revival soon reached Texas and was carried by a Texas preacher to Los Angeles, The Azusa Street meetings were internationally known at the time During the early half of this century various groups were organized as a result of the California revival. Two of the groups wen? to grow into The„ Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ,' Inc., and The Pentecostal Church, Inc.In 1944, the two groups were organized k into the United Pentecostal Church -According to Pastor Carnley, “The t basic and fundamental doctrine of thisI organization is the Bible standard offull salvation which is repentance, L baptism in water by immersion in thej name of the Lord Jesus Christ for thet remission of'sins, and the baptism of3 the Holy Ghost with the initial sign of' speaking with other tongues as thej Spirit gives utterance.”The church teaches a belief in Divine a Healing and Holiness of life.'
