After rowing aa far as they could, the hunters moored their boats and started outon foot to retrieve.Jenkins threw off his coat and tried to swim. On his first attempt he found his high hip boots had filled with water and sand, which weighted him down. He tried to pull his Uv* out of them, but did ntft succeed. He shouted “Quicksand!’' to Erb, who then realised the danger for the first time. Erb pulled off his jacket, and, holding one corner, threw it out to the sinking man. When he tried to drag Jenkins toward him in that way, however, the youth found that he, too, was being swallowed up.“Save yourself, my boy! cried Jenkins.Both hunters then shouted with all their lung power in hope of attracting others who might be la the swamp, but their calls were not immediately answered. Gradually Jenkins sank until only his head and shoulderswere visible. Despite this he kept encouraging Erb to struggle toward the shallow water they had passedthrough.“Take your time, my boy. Don’t exhaust yourself,” Jenkins kept saying, as the mud slowly dragged him down. “You can make it if you do not get tired out.”Taking Jenkins' advice Erb struggled slowly in the mud.
