fWhile the rain was falling1 in® torrents last night about 10o’clock, a person who was passing the home of Mrs. George W. McArthur, 90 Middle street, Saco, was startled by hearing feeble cries issuing from a pasteboard carton on the doorsteps of the McArthur residence, and making an investigation found an infant childpacked in the container. The police were notified and hurried to Middle street and took the babe to police headquarters. They called a physician who told the officers to take the infant to a local hospital.The baby, a girl, when taken from the carton at the police station, was unclothed, and was wrapped in an old couch cover and a bedspread.The baby seemed to be all right this forenoon at the hospital.The police, who have been conducting an investigation, had not learned up to early this afternoon who abandoned the tiny girl. People living in the vicinity of where the infant was found, told the police that they did not see anyone carrying a carton on the street last night. It was suggested that perhaps the baby had been taken to Middle street in an automobile and placed on tin* front doorsteps. IIow long the little tot had been on the steps before being discovered is not known.The police were told late this forenoon that it was believed by the physician at the hospital that the baby was probably three days old.
