(6:45 p.m. CST). In suburban areas many persons ran ; from their homes- Dishes rattled i in some areas.Dr. Charles Richter of the scis-mol ogical J a bora lory of the California Institute of Technology said it was a “heavy quake” but apparently centered offshore in the Pacific Ocean somewhere.Dr, Richter said the quake was strong enough to cause damage at its comer, which he estimated to be less than 1 GO miles from. Pasadena, where the laboratory is located.The quake was felt as far north as Ventura and as. far south as San Diego at the border. It extended inland toward .the desert as far as San Bernardino and Victorville. At Inglewood, in the southwest part of Los Angeles county, police said the jolt set off burglar alarms.• There were reports of the quake from; six counties ..in Southern California.-. The quake .extended 325 miles from^north to south, and had a radius of about 110 miles east and west.
