THE OLD DUTCH CASTLEBy Wallace E. MartinOne of the outstanding Humboldt landmarks for nearly three-quarters of a century was a building known to Eurekans as the “Dutch Castle.” It was located at 2310 Union street. With its massive stonework and sculptured lions guarding the doorway, it was of European styled architecture.When I was five years old, my family moved to a cottage at the corner of Buhne and Union streetsiust across the street from the “Castle. We frequently saw the owners, but knew little of them. Franz Bernau_ . Construction began s^oHly there after Mose Poyfaire on one occasion told me Bernau did the work himself, the labor consuming many years.Death records indicate Mrs. Bernau contractedpneumonia and typhoid in the spring of 1910.
