He Was (liunninu II. Hnrne.*, Alias•Ioilii 15. ]NOlson,Now Orleans, Deo. 19.—Late in theday the dond robber was identified as Chnnning 15. Barnes, alias John 11. Nelson, alias Jack Nelson. lie waswanted for holding* up the Illinois Central train near Wiekliffe, Iv.v., last July, and robbing* the safe of thewneriean Lx press Co. His brother, ( harles W\ Ha rues and Richard Dovlewere convicted for this latter robbery and each is serving* a sentence in theKentucky state penitentiary.When the attempt was made to arrest Chaini ng- Barnes, in St. Louis, heshot Chief Special Agent George Murray and made his escape.When the body was discovered it was found that Barnes had out histhroat and had evidently His own watch and that of Conductor Kinnabrew were running. He had been wounded in the back and leftwrist. Registered letters and dynamite were found on the body.
