BEF Okays Budgets For Higher EducationSANTA FE (UPD- The State Board of Educational Finance has approved a recommendation of ^55.5 million for New Mexico's higher education budget in the 1973-74 fiscal year.The figure is $5.1 million more than the current year appropriation.The appropriation recom-mendedalion includes $26.6 million for the University of New Mexico and $10.3 million for New Mexico State University.The board also approved a . list of projects proposed by the stale educational institutions for funding from the state s anticipated $41 million surplus. The projects total almost $6 million and are for capital improvements.UNM would receive the largest share of Ihe money, if approved by the legislature. The recommendation for UNM was $3.5 million.The BEF approved a recommendation of $850,000 for New Mexico Slate University from Ihe surplus funds.The BEF also approved a plan for allocating funds derived from the sale of slate educational institution library bonds. New Mexico voters approved the $10 million bond issue in Ihe Nov. 7 general election. The bond money would be spread out over a five-year period.Under Ihe plan, UNM wouldreceive $4.1 million for Ihe main campus with $350,000 each for its medical school and law school. Its Gallup branch and new Northern New Mexico branch would receive $50,000.NMSU would receive $2.1 million for its main campus, $70,000 for the Alamogordo branch; $50,000 each for the Carlsbad and Grants branches, and $80,000 for Ihe San Juan branch at Farmington.New Mexico Highlands will receive $469,123, Western New Mexico will receive $217,17$, Eastern New Mexico University will receive $017,999 for its maincampus and $50,000 each for its branches at Clovis and lies we II. New Mexico Tech will receive $571,782 and New.Mexico Military Institute and Now Mexico Junior College will receive $50,000 each.Other proposed budget recommendations for the other major institutions for next fiscal year were:Highlands, $3.1 million, Western, $1.0 million, Eastern $5.1 million. New Mexico Tech, $2.5 million, NMMI, $179,000.The REF also approved a proposed program to give tourism training sessions :n sLale-supporled institutions of higher education.The program has been urgedby the Department of Develop-' ment and a special Ia?h force on tourism.
