Relic of lionir A#o.Baraboo, WisM Dec. 1.—[Special.]— While digging i» a mound for rabbits near Prairie du Sac. John By an of that place came upon some queer relics of perhaps centuries ago. He first encountered a halberd, such as was often carried by the Spanish, French and other soldiers who came to tliia country for adventure. The blade is over ten inches long and about half as wide, measuring from the edge to the neck which connects the cutting portion of the instrument with the part to which the handle was attached. It resembled a broad axe used by o carpenter except that there had been a sharp point on the opposite side of the blade where the head or the axe Is located. In the specimen found by Mr. Kynn the shurp point had been broken away, Thorp was an eye for the handle of six or more feet in length. How the hqlberd came to be In the mount] is a mystery. It is passible that it was carried to WiBConsiii by La Salle, Tonty, Marquette, Joliet or some of the early explorers who came to this state in the last half of the Seventeenth century. It will be remembered that these early characters in Wisconsin history journeyed from Green Bay up the Fox river and then down the Wisconsin to the Mississippi: In making the trip one way orthe other they _ passed along the Wisconsin river near where the weapon was found. It was probably secured by some brave Indian in battle or In exchange for fure and then burled with him when he was ready to depart foe* the everlasting hunting grounds.Besides the halberd he dug out some stone axes and stone celts, blit no bones were unearthed.
