Head-On Accident Kills 3 PersonsBAILEY — A grinding head-on collision between two automobiles between Bailey and Sims last night claimed the lives of a Middlesex couple and their four-year-old daughter.State Highway Patrol Trooper L. E. Raynor identified the victims as Jim Atlas Whitaker, 41, Lena Wrhitaker, 41, and Denise Whitaker, 4, all of Rt. 1, Middlesex.The trooper said another child, Jerome Whitaker. 9. and Willie Alston, 33, Rt. 1, Sims, were injuredA spokesman at Wilson Memorial Hospital this morning said the child was in good condition while Alston was listed in fair condition.The accident, which upped Nash County 's traffic death toll to26, occurred on rain - slick U.S. Highway 264. about one-half mile west of the Wilson County line, about 8:50 p.mTrooper Raynor said .Alston was operating a 1960 car east on the two-lace highway when he attempted to pass another car and his automobile collided head-on with the Whitaker vehicle being driven west.Impact sent the 1965 car down an embankment, and the vehicle came to rest on its side.The trooper said it was the worst traffic accident in Nash County this year. He added he was told the Whitaker couple has a son in the Marines; another at Shaw University and twin girlsTrooper Raynor is continuing his investigation today.
