Nixon was the lone witness. Questioned by Dist. Atty. James Kazen. Nixon said teachers did not contribute to the Independent Club political fund. He said he never coerced any teacher to vote for any personor party.The Independent Club is thedominant local political party.Nixon invited Kazcn to “call any one or all of our 3o0 teachers'’ for questioning about contributions.He said he urged teachers to buy poll taxes and to vote, but only to exercise their rights ascitizens.A subpoena had been issued for Manuel Gutierrez, chief deputy clerk and treasurer of the Independent Club, but the sheriffs oflicer said it had been unable to serve the papers.
