Rebuilding Time For Ironwood GirlsWhen a coach loses five to seven players with two to three years of starting experience off a team that went 23-1 the year before, it becomes “start from scratch” time. That is the chore facing Russ Anderson, the Ironwood high school girls’ basketball coach, this year.Gone from last year’s cohesive unit in addition to experience is a whole lot of height. “That will be our biggest obstacle this year,” cited Anderson. “Nancy Dalpiaz, at 5-9, is our tallest player, with no other team member over 5-6. ”Anderson will try to compensate with aggressive defense, a trademark of his past Ironwood teams. “We’ll probably dig into our bag of tricks and show some new looks, especially on defense, this year.” Returning is Cheryl Sullivan, a senior guard who started about half of Ironwood’s games last season as a substitute for the injured Karen Angwin. Cheryl Angwin, sister of Karen, also saw considerable action off the bench last year as a sophomore. Dalpiaz and Dawn Doman, a senior forward, are the other returnees.Anita Harvey, a sophomore forward, may start right now along with Angwin and Sullivan, with the other two spots wide open. “Right now the best shooting team that I can floor is not my best rebounding team,” Anderson cited. “That is why it is hard to come up with a set lineup. ”The other starters will come from the following: senior — Dalpiaz; juniors — Chris Johnson, forward; Ann DeCarlo, center-forward; Debbie Auvinen, guard; Kristin Thomas, forward; Angie Rickard, forward, and Sarah Pierpont, guard.“The team has been working hard and the attitude is excellent,” cited Anderson. “This is going to be a character building■year for us, but if the girls develop into a cohesive unit we may pull a few surprises.”Although Anderson knows it will be hard to duplicate on his 23-1 mark of last year and difficult to build 63-23 log in his four years as Ironwood mentor, he is looking forward to it. It will be an enjoyable experience working with a team with this type of attitude. The early schedule favors his young team in that the first three games will be in front of the home folks. However, the second game, set for Tuesday, Sept. 15, will be a confrontation with Ontonagon, one of the Upper Peninsula Class C powers and the only team to defeat Ironwood last season.Schedule:Thursday, Sept. 10 — Waters meet, home, 7 p.m.Sept. 15—Ontonagon, home, 7 p.m.Sept. 17 — Ironwood Catholic, home, 7 p.m.Sept. 22 — Hancock, away,6:30 p.m.Sept. 24 — Wakefield, home, 7 p.m.Sept. 29 — Houghton, away, 6:30 p.m.Oct. 1 — Waters meet, away, 7 p.m.Oct. 5 — West Iron County, away, 7 p.m.Oct. 8 — L’Anse, home, 7 p.m.Oct. 13 —Calumet, away, 4:45 p.m.Oct. 15 — Bessemer, home, 7 p.m.Oct. 20 — Ontonagon, away, 6:30 p.m.Oct. 23 —Hancock, home, 7 p.m.Oct. 29 — Houghton, home, 7 p.m.Oct. 30 — West Iron County, home, 7 p.m.Nov. 3 — L’Anse, away, 6:30 p.m.Nov. 5 — Bergland, home, 7 p.m.Nov. 10 —Calumet, home, 7 p.m.Nov. 12 —Bessemer, away, 7:30 p.m.Nov. 17 — Wakefield, away, 7:30 p.m.
