What TheySqy About StockyardsO. P. Meloy, president of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce and president of the. Joplin Printing Company: “I think, the Joplinstockyards are the 'greatest thing Joplin business has promoted for a good many years. I think there will be a great many kindred lines of business that will come here to interest the farmers and producers and to attract them to the stockyards. It will be a big thing not only for Joplin but for the entire district.”Harry A. Itlchardson, vice president of the Conqueror First National bank: ‘‘The stockyards area community asset. My observation is that they are one of the biggest things this territory has had presented to it. It is second only to the mining industry as our chief asset. I believe “the personnel in charge of the stockyards will make a real success of it. I believe the territory is large enough to support the new industry and, personally, I am high on the future outlook for its development.”J. N. Wells, general manager ofthe Joplin Water Works Company: “Personally, I believe the stockyards are the largest development in the history of Joplin and the district outside of the development of lead and zinc industry. They will be a wonderful thing for everyone in all lines of business in the district. I am as enthusiastic over the stockyards as it is possible to be.”George A. Smith, distrlot superintendent of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company: “I am not.very familiar with the operation of a stockyards, but it occurs to me that it should be a big business puller and should mean much new money to Joplin and the district.”F. C. Ralston, president of the Joplin Supply Company: “X feelthat the Joplin stockyards promises to be one of the biggest things for the future development of Joplin and the district that has ever been accomplished.”George W. Neal, president of the Fipkin-Boyd-Neal Packing Company: “I think the Joplin districtstockyards' is one of the biggest things ever offered the community. I know it will succeed in a big way if it is given the proper support of the people and if we can get our district producers to producing more livestock.”John L. Crocker, president of the Crocker Packing Company: ,“We are strong for the. stockyards. We believe they will be the biggest and best thing this district has ever had if we get the ^supply of livestock to sustain them.”,' \James E. Harsh, vie® president and general manager of the Empire District Electric Company: “In my opinion the stockholders of Joplin Stockyards, Inc., could perform no greater service for Joplin and the inhabitants of the large trade territory surrounding the city than they have done in promoting the stockyards project. Increased stock raising will be encouraged in territory most suitable for that purpose. Nothing makes for a secure, prosperous and dependable terri-torlal income like diversity of interests and industry. In the territory surrounding Joplin we find hundreds of small as well as large farms raising grains, fruits, vegetables and livestock. Suitable markets for everything but livestock had- heretofore been provided in Joplin or vicinity. And now the stockyards round out the market facilities needed for a complete development of the resources of the region.” ______Joseph E. Garm, vice president of the Joplin National Bank and Trust Company: “The stockyardsare a great institution and a great thing for Joplin and the territory. They will bring the buyer and the seller together. It means more money to the district and that means more money for the producers and for ourselves. The Joplin Stockyards Company Is to be congratulated upon the way it built the yards. Livestock men with whom I have talked have been high in their praise of the local, yards and have described it as the.^last word in stockyards construction.”Roscoe Haughawout, manager of the Southwestern Brokerage Company: “The subject and business of stockyards is somewhat foreign to me, but it is my judgment that such an institution will be a wonderful thing for Joplin and the district”Thomas J. Roney, manager of the Webb City Chamber of Commerce monthly sales day:You are asking me the question: Do you think the stockyards located iir Jasper county will benefit of injure the Webb City Chamber of Commerce sales?“I have been the manager of the Webb City Chamber of Commerce monthly sales for about twelve years and it is my opinion the stockyards located as near Webb City as they are will be a big benefit to our monthly sales. I can’t see it in any other way.“You know it is the farmer, the cattle dealer and the individual citizen around our town who bring to our monthly sale one, two three milk cows—cows with calves at their side, and cows of the dairy type. Heifers developing into dairy animals. The buyers we find are the man and the wife coming to our sale looking for a good family milk cow, the cattle dealers from north Missouri, northeastern Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska looking for and buying in carload lots good dairy prospects to ship to their different states where the dealer in his own way and method ' makes distribution to the people in his district, who are short on milk producing stock. The yellow jersey is the best seller.“Good ones are always in demand and our organization has sold more animals through its auction ring than any other organization in this district. The farmer generally brings a beef animal or two with his dairy cows and the beef stuff as bid on by cattle dealers who are as. sembllng a herd to ship to the market. This cattle dealer from now on will take his herd to the stock market in Jasper county where he will find a ready market for all that he has been able to assemble.“The stockyards market in Jasper county will enable the cattle dealer to pay a little more money at sole for the beef animal which the farmer brings, because the dealer can, at a very small cost, put ,hls beef animals, purchased at our sale, into the stockyards.“The man with a family is always looking for a batter family milk cow. The stockyards cannot possibly injure our sales, because who pects to purchase his family milk cow out of the stockyard pens of any of our stockyards? If the best place to buy a family milk cow would be from the stockyard pens, then why is it that the stockyards in Kansas City, St. Louis and Chi-cago have not been the place to go and buy your family milk cows?“From our sales and the other Chamber of Commerce sales in our different towns in this district will always be the place where you will find the purchasers looking for family milk cows. But tlie stock yards Will eventually receive all of the beef animals passed through our monthly sales as well as the other monthly sales held in this district. I say the stockyards will make our monthly sales bigger and better.J. C. Veatch, chairman of tileagricultural committee of the Webb City Chamber of Commerce: predict that the new stockyards will bring to this district a volume of trade heretofore neglected by merchants and business men of Joplin and surrounding towns. As one industry builds up another, feel confident that. the stockyards will draw to this district allied concerns, who will establish themselves to share in the business incident to the yards. Speaking for myself, I will say that I am a 100 per cent booster for Mr. Buchanan and his associates in this enterprise and feel that the business men of Webb City almost to a man' are like me.”Walter Ragland, mayor of Webb City: “As mayor of Webb City,' Iextend ^ congratulations to Mr, Buchanan and company for their success in building the stockyards, I feel safe in saying the entire citizenship of Webb City feel proud of their ' accomplishment.- Our city and trade territory, no doubt, will benefit in a material way along with the entire Tri-State district. Here is hoping that other industries will fall in the march of progress along with ‘Buck’ and his stockyards.”E. E. Wood, Webb City merchant and chairman of the industrial division of the Webb City Chamber of Commerce: “The opening of the Joplin stockyards will be the beginning of the most important trade builder for the Tri-State district. It will bring stockmen here for a hundred miles distance and will open, up new avenues for larger business. Webb City is for the stockyards company 100 per cent strong and we are ready to boost it all we can. The stock business is not new to Webb City, For years back the business men of Webb City,' headed by, Fant Ball, started the first calf club and from that day on we have had a keen interest in the stock business. So we are indeed glad to see our dream of a central stockyards come true. If properly handled, which I am sure it will be under the management of Mr. Buchanan, I feel the stockyards will grow to be largest of its kind in the southwest. My hearty good wishes to all who made this possible.”WHERE LIVESTOCK WILL BE LOADED OUT ON WAY TO MARKETSWhere all livestock will be loaded out of the stockyards on the way to other markets. Photo shows the stockyards chutes fronting the main 3,100-foot switch built into the yards by the Missouri Paolflc Railroad. At the left is the stockpen haybarn.from the stimulation that will come to general lines of business. Good houses are.scarcer now than when the census was taken. Rents may be expected to increase, and that is what puts life into property values. The people of Joplin do not realize the far-reaching effect of this new industry and its many beneficial ramifications,”Mark J. Ettingor, general manager Newman Mercantile Company: “The most important chapter of our city’s commercial history will be written with the opening of her new stockyards. With their inception is launched a new channel of industry and a new source of income for Joplin and environs. Not alone is the opening of the stockyards to be considered but the many kindred industries that will follow in their wake. Carncli, stockman and farmer residing near Pineville: I have been watching development of the new stockyards movement in Joplin with a great deal of interest for I expect to patronize the stockyards. They would be a great help to we livestock raisers of McDonald and adjoining counties for they Will give us a nearby competitive market such as we have long needed. F. Deem, proprietor of Chicago market at Galena: The Joplin stockyards will be an inducement to farmers and stockmen in the district to raise better stock. It will holp to grade and classify the stock. I believe ' the farmers in the district will raise a much higher grade of stock in the future. The Joplin stockyards will give the farmers Jn this district a close market for their stock and it will bring more money into the district and also will afford a much closer buying point.”F. W. Mizer, mayor of Picher: The benefits to the farmer and stock- raiser of this district should be far reaching. It affords the farmer an' opportunity to dispose of his surplus stock conveniently without the long haul to distant markets. It will also enable him to market his grain by the well known method of feeding. Competition between buyers of hogs, cattle and sheep will be evident for hundreds of miles in all directions. Last, but hot least, the stimulation to industry should be an asset to any community which it affects.”Paul L. Heilman, President Picher Chamber of Commerce: “Joplin is to be congratulated on the completion of her stockyards. We feel that this marks the beginning of better market and trade conditions for this area. Northeast Oklahoma should benefit along with southwest Missouri. Farmers and stock raisers in this part of Ottawa coun ty Bhould receive these benefits di rectiy and the business concerns in an indirect way.”A. J. Miller, Neosho, secretary ofthe Newton County Harvest Show and widely known Guernsey breeder: “Any additional markets we oan get in this territory to take the farmers’ products is a valuable asset. The Joplin stockyards will be a big help to all livestock raisers.Tom Taylor, Columbus, prominent Cherokee county farmer and livestock breeder: “I’m certainly infavor of any market that will pay a. farmer a profit for the stock he raises. I congratulate Mr. Buchanan and his associates in the success of their efforts in making this project possible.”H. E. Nowell, president of the Webb City Chamber of Commerce: “The new Joplin stockyards is an institution that this community has needed for a long time. H. Bathurst of the Quisen-berry-Bathurst Company: SinceI have been in business here have thought many times that Joplin merchants did not try hard enough to interest the farmer when, in reality, the farm territory could afford more business than the mining territory. It brings the market close to the farmer and keeps his community more intact.”Fire Chief Earl Fowler: “I have inspected the Joplin stockyards and have found them ideally con-'structed for elimination of fire hazards. In fact, they will have better water pressure out there than downtown because of the low elevation.”D. D.
