SALT LAKE.CITY, Utah, Aug. 18,—(UP)—The Right Rev. Arthur Moulton, Episcopal Bishop of Utah, is not in entire sympathy with the birth, control recommendation made at the Lambeth conference Friday. There may be something to be said for it/‘he admitted. “It would seem tb*be advantageous 'under certain economic circnmstanc.es. ^ It ts possible that it might alleviate 'distress and suffering- On the otner hand there is- much against it M country can afford to have its burm rate greatly. lessened. . Much less can any country afford to have its-moral and spiritual fibre reduced and weakened' by. an indulgence m the sexual, instinct - for itself only. Smithv archdeacon of the Episcopal church here. . • “You may say for me that I am unalterably opposed ta the attitude of the conference, in recommending that divorced- persons be prevented from remarrying while their former, partner is1 alive,” he said. ■-Dr. Smith also expressed opposition to the resolution -which provided that Christians be allowed to use Mrth control methods- where there is.a dearly felt moral obligation to limit-.or avoids parentage.”BEN-LINDSEY VIEWS.LOS ANGELES, Aug. IS,—COP)— Judge Ben Lindsey,’one of the .foremost advocates of - birth control in the United States,, told tire United Press today that he; felt the Epis-lems. of life so candidly and the event marks a wholly new departure of the relations of the church and human society and an attempt to accommodate religion to the new problems in secular affairs. In this respect the most discussed feature o-f. the encyclical is that referring to- the vexed, question of birth control, in re-, gard to which opinion hi the church has been undergoing sub*? stamtial modification^ under, the influence of combative propaganda by Dean Inge. •Hie conclusion of the bishops is carefully guarded bu-t the outstanding fact remains that, as 'the London Times observes, “for the first time the practice of birth control in certain circumstances- is recognized by the hierarchy- of the Anglican com--EttuniaB.'’'UNITY OF CHURCH.This decision has a not unimportant. bearing on the problem of the unity of the church,, ia view of the uncompromising negative of the Roman Gathohc 1 hierarchy towards the practice. But-apart from this- vital disagreement, the-encyclical recognises regretfully that the failure of the Malines conversations with Cardinal Mercer excludes the- hope of the participation of Rome in the movement towards the reunion of the Christian churches. - . .This movement is nevertheless . one' of - the most significant fea-■ mires of- the- bishop's report. Theemphasis laid on hew-discussions -with • the . eastern orthodox churches and the: fact that an important delegation led by the patriarch of Alexandria attended the conference give promise- of practical results,- Even more importance is attached in the press to the 'bishops blessing of the union of the Anglicans with ‘the non-conformists in the mission field of South India, which indicates a new development in the policy- of the,Anglican'church.EXPERIMENT WELCOMED.. The bishops recognize . quite frankly that the new communion ■tvill not be really ■ Anglican at nil and yet altogether welcome the - venture as an experiment which may have important and illuminating results in the- development of a church of the uni-■ verse. This- idea of the reunion of Christendom, with the largest■ of freedom within the . union for differences-, of practice and doctrine, runs through the encyclical and the influence of such a reunion upon secular affairs is illustrated- by the declaration^ .T* if'v “‘LT, that the Christian churches m.? former 'every- nation should refuse to -countenance 'any-war in' regard to which the.-government of its own country has declined to sub -nut the dispute to arbitration. Inge’s-- advocacy ■ of two forms . Of marriage, one secular and subject to divorce and the other spiritual and not subject to divorce, receives no -sanction, or comment. ■The other, ground, for dissatisfaction is the timid approach to the recognition of women in- the service of the church. Opinion on this, subject had strengthened under the. post-war emancipation of women and the case of . Maude Royden has given the question great public prominence. The bishop's concession that women be eligible as deaconesses is regarded as an illogical and. indefensible position.' The London Daily News sees no cause for restriction except, absolute-prejudice and -the gen-., era! view is that full’ recognition of sex equality in the service of the church- cannot • be perma-here nenfely resisted-
