Hopeful says district must do more with fewer dollarsBy ANNE PHILLIPSCourier Staff WriterCEDAR FALLS — Providing additional opportunities for Cedar Falls students and learning to do more in education with fewer resources are two of the goals of board candidate Richard Juel.Juel is one of four candidates who are seeking election to the seven-member board of education in the Sept. 10 school board election.Juel, 41, of 504 Forest Road, is a process engineer for Deere lt;Co. He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial education from the University. of Northern Iowa and has completed additional graduate work in industrial technology at IJNI and the University of Wisconsin, Plat-teville.Born in Waverly and raised in Tripoli, Juel has lived 12 of the last 15 years in Cedar Falls. After graduating from UNI, he taught in Vinton until 1976, when he became tradesand industries coordinator at CedarFalls High School. Juel worked forthe Cedar Falls Schools for 3 1/2 years until 1979, when he joined Deere lt;Co. The Juels moved to Dubuque in 1985 but returned to Cedar Falls in early 1989.If elected to the board, Juel said he will first work to identify needs and concerns.“I think the first thing a person needs to do is go in and get a good picture of where things are at and then look at where the issues are, and go from there,’* he said.Juel believes that with the passage of the instructional support levy earlier this year Cedar Falls voters sent a message to the district that “the taxpayers aren't willing to acceptless than they are getting today. I think it’s a charge to the board from this point forward not only to maintain the level that we’ve got, but we’ve got to be looking at things to improve the level of education, the excellence and the opportunities. We need to continue to provide better and more opportunities for students.”Richard JuelAGE: 41EMPLOYMENT: Process engineer, Deere Co.BORN: WaverlyEDUCATION: bachelor’sdegree, University of Northern Iowa; additional graduate study at UNI and the University of Wisconsin, Plattevilie.FAMILY: wife, Diane; two daughters, Shani, 21, and Jenna, 16; and one son, Jordan, 7.Juel said the passage of the levy also means that the board needs to keep “the community informed on what’s happening with that money and keep them involved in making the decisions that we need to make over the next few years.”With a tight budget, Juel said that as a board member, he would work to help the district “do more with less” without having to ask for additional dollars.“I think one thing that’s going to be important is that we continue tohave the community involved and parents involved with what’s going on with the schools,” he said.“Cedar Falls has some real excellent things going: strong PTAs (parent teacher associations) in the elementary schools,.the secondary schools have some strong booster clubs in band, athletics and other areas. But I think we need to do more of that and get parents more involved with the direction we take with the schools.
