Miss Elva Holford and • Miss Esther Cochrane owned and lt;directed the camp from 1911. They left their jobs as teacher* in Grafton Hall. Fond du Lac, to start the camp on land which had once been the dowry of William Lucas of St. Louii at the time of his marriage to Mary Homer, daughter of Wisconsin's first territorial governor. The couple lived there until 1890,Miss Holford retired in 1925 but Miss Cochrane directed the camp until 1037. She now lives in Tampa, Fla. Mrs. Gladys Reichenbach operated the camp to 1900 when Chris and Jane Vee purchased it.The founder of the camp has stated, '‘Sandstone was founded as the first girls’ camp west of New England. There were then three girls’ camps in Maine, but the camping idea was almost completely unknown.” She adds that camping is an experience to teach democratic group behavior and to give young girls the oppor-Jong ago.To begin with, the first drug store established in Green Lake was started by E.
