Yesterday And Today—Veteran Sumner Lived To 105 YearsBy SHIRLEY DONNELLYWhen Quincy E. Painter called on me recently, the matter of his relationship to the late Wyatt Sumner (1832-1937) of MacDonald was discussed.Wyatt Sumner lived to the great age of 105 years and 22 days and was the oldest person at whose funeral I have ever officiated in whole, or in part,Sumner was a Confederate soldier who hailed from Floyd County, Va. His wife died in June, 1932, at the age of 98 years. This aged couple are buried in the hillside Cemetery at MacDonald,Hessian soldiers of the British Army, plus a large quantity of arms and ammunition. That was known as “The victory of Trenton/'In the possession of Quincy E. Painter is the iron ladle which Jeremiah Sumner carried in the Revolutionary War for melting the lead which he used in molding bullets for his rifle. That old ladle looks like it rendered a lot of service. It was made in 1704.SUMNER'S grandfather, Jeremiah Sumner, was a Revolutionary War soldier in thp army commanded by Gen. George Washington. Jeremiah was one of the 2,500-man army that crossed the Delaware River on Christmas night, 1776. They captured 1,000SUMNER had four brothers: Isaiah, Fountain, Dave, and Wally. The first three were born in Virginia, but Wally was born in West Virginia.Isaiah — the brother of Wyatt — was drowned in New River near Prince in 1900. He had been hunting with two dogs and his rifle. In crossing the river at the close of the hunt the two dogs got to fighting in the small boat and caused it to capsize. The rifle was never retrieved from the river. My AnswerBy BILLY GRAHAMWALLY Sumner, another brother of Wyatt, was killed on Batoff Mountain near Prince when a log in a timbering operation rolled over him and crushed him to death. The father of Wyatt and his four brothers was Isaac — some say Isaiah. A sister of the Sumner brothers was Nannie, who married Gordon Biggs. They lived at Sweenysburg in Raleigh County. They had a daughter, Miranda. She married John Ed Painter. That couple were the parents of Quincy. Thus, Waytt Sumner and Quincy Painter’s grandmother were brother and sister, Dave Sumner, a brother of Wyatt, settled in-Putnam County.CHARLES Painter, the greatgrandfather of Quincy came from the Shenandoah Valley and settled near Dothan in Fayette Countv in Civil War days.Charles freed his slaves when the Union Army took over where he lived in Virginia. The slaves came with Charles Painter — all but one. That one was killed with a pitchfork when he attempted to kill Painter with a club. .The sons of Charles Painter were Thomas, John, Joe, James, and Charles Jr. These became the progenitors of most of the Painter families in Fayette County.
