MARKED ANNIVERSARYHolmesburg Baptist Church Is Scventy Years OldSpecial exercises in celebration of theseventieth anniversary ot the historic Holmesburg Baptist Church were held yesterday. The morning sermon was preached by Rev. Dr. C. IT Ihomas. Atthe evening services addresses were madeby Rev. Dr. J. J. Rowland and by Rev. S. Austin Tield, pastor of the church. The congregation is the outcome of a union Sunday-school, held in an old school house on Erdrick street. In December, 1828, a special meeting was held to organize for the erection ot a church. The ground was given by George W. Holme, who was afterwards a deacon. The corner-stone was laid April 2d, l*~d, by Rev. David Jones, pastor of LowerDublin Baptist Church.On April 19, 1882, thirty-three mem hers withdrew from th£ Dublin Baptist Church and were instituted as an inde-pendent congregation, lhe church ^di-lice was destroyed bv fire on Sunday morning, April 2, 1865. Anew brown stone building, costing over $21,OHO, waserected in its stead. The new buildingwas dedicated November 28, 1868. During the Civil War, weekly prayer meetings for the divine blessings on the eoun-trv were held.- . ,
